About Tameside Community Computers CIC

Tameside Community Computers grew out of community work by local IT firm ZenTec during the pandemic and became a community interest company in 2022. Its volunteers take in laptops, desktops, Macs, tablets, phones and monitors from businesses, schools, organisations and the public, erase the data using Certus software (issuing a certificate for each device), and refurbish machines in-house, typically fitting SSDs and upgrading memory.

Refurbished devices go mainly to young people aged 10 to 25 in and around Tameside who are referred by partner organisations such as social workers, schools, housing associations and support services; the CIC charges a low administration fee unless funding covers it. Equipment that cannot be reused is stripped and recycled.

It offers free collection of large donations from schools, charities and businesses, and says it can provide asset reports, recycling and data-erasure certificates to donating organisations.
