About IT ReUse (Community Furniture Stores)

IT ReUse was set up in 2019 by Community Furniture Stores, a North Yorkshire furniture reuse charity, to tackle digital exclusion in York. Donated computers and mobile devices are securely wiped, repaired and refurbished by staff and volunteers at the charity's York store on James Street, then given free of charge to people referred by trusted partner organisations; community groups can also ask for machines.

Members of the public can drop off laptops, desktop PCs, tablets, smartphones and monitors at the store or at two partner drop-off points (the Belfrey in central York and Selby Community House). The charity says it erases data with industry-standard software and issues a data-destruction certificate for each laptop or desktop.

For businesses with quantities of IT to dispose of, it offers free certified data erasure, secure lockable transport and on-site secure storage until equipment is processed, with capacity to erase about 20 devices a day. The project also gives volunteers training and a route into IT work.
