About ReTec (Wokingham Lions Club)
ReTec (Recycling Technology) is a project started in 2024 by Wokingham Lions Club with First Days Children's Charity and Wokingham Borough Libraries. Lions volunteers collect used laptops from drop-off points at local libraries, the Wokingham Charity and Community Hub and SHARE Wokingham sites, store them securely, wipe all data first, then test, repair and clean each machine and install Windows 11 or ChromeOS.
Refurbished laptops are given to families and individuals facing financial hardship who are vetted by First Days, and to Ukrainian refugees and local charities; more than 200 had been renovated by the time of writing. The project particularly wants corporate laptops when companies upgrade, and can arrange collection if needed.
