About Computer Aid International
Computer Aid International is a long-established UK charity with its head office in Fitzrovia, central London, and offices in South Africa and Kenya. It runs an IT disposal service for businesses and organisations: rather than selling the equipment for profit, it refurbishes it for schools, community projects and non-profits, mainly in Africa and Latin America but also in the UK.
Collections are made by tracked courier and taken to the secure facility of its supplier, Tier 1 Asset Management, in Whitefield, Manchester, where its workshop is based. Drives are overwritten three times with verification using HMG/NIST-approved software, and faulty hard drives are shredded with a certificate of destruction. Usable kit is graded and refurbished; the rest is recycled through downstream WEEE recyclers.
It charges for collection and recycling on a per-pallet basis but reduces or waives fees where much of the equipment can be reused, and can offer on-site wiping, revenue share or redeployment of refurbished kit on request.
