About Computer Friendly (St Albans)

Computer Friendly is a volunteer-run St Albans charity, holder of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, that offers low-cost IT courses and drop-in help. During the pandemic it started refurbishing donated devices, and it has now received nearly 700 unwanted laptops, phones and tablets.

Volunteers remove and physically destroy each laptop's hard drive, fit a new SSD, add memory and install Windows before passing the machine to someone referred by organisations such as the St Albans Old People's Trust, Mind or local schools. Devices that cannot be refurbished are disposed of under WEEE rules after the drive has been destroyed. It accepts recent laptops, phones and tablets but not desktop PCs, printers, small monitors or peripherals.
